Tuesday Tip: Free Paint and Cleaning Supplies

Want to curb the costs of cleaning and maintaining your home? You might be able to get yourself some free cleaning supplies and free paint at your local Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) facility. When you have some extra hazardous waste (like oil-based paint, kitchen cleaners, grout, tile sealant, and detergent), you don’t just just throw it in the trash (I hope). It goes to the HHW facility for recycling. But they don’t just dispose of the materials. Some locations will give these cleaning supplies away for free! This can really help with your household budget.

Avoid credit card debt with free stuff.

Avoid credit card debt with free stuff.

Many HHW facilities have product exchange rooms, or “swap shops”. Materials brought here are processed and checked by the facility to be sure it’s safe for use. Then it’s put out on the shelf for anyone to take. This keeps waste out of the land fill and money in your pocket. If you’re paying off debt, any way to save money helps.

The next time you’re in need of some cleaning supplies or some paint, stop by your local HHW facility. You need to be a resident of that facility’s city/town to leave items, but many will allow anyone to take items away for use.

Contact your local waste management or public works department to find an HHW facility near you.

If you’re struggling to pay off debt, ACCC can help. Schedule a free credit counseling session with us today.
