Groceries make up of a large portion of your monthly expenses, and it is not always easy to just buy what you intended to buy. Here are some money saving tips for the grocery store, so that the next time you are shopping you can avoid those unplanned expenses.
Tips to save money in the grocery store
Take time to make a list before you go.
You might think your memory is so good and you don’t need a written shopping list. But, no matter how good your memory is, take a minute and write a list before you leave home. Not only will it help you remember the things you need, it will deter you from buying the things you don’t need.
Did you forget the coupons?
Couponing is a great way to save up some serious cash if you pay enough attention. Grab the weekly circular in the grocery store before you head inside and see if anything can be applied for the day’s shopping trip. If you collected any coupons at home remember to take them with you.
Brands or bargains?
Look for sales in store. Pick items in bulk when it is practical to do so. You might be used to a particular brand, but the generic options are usually cheaper. Give them a try. You might find that you prefer the store brand. Also, compare prices before you pick the first item you see on shelf. Look up and look down, because it’s the eye-level shelves that stock the priciest items.
Opt to eat in season.
Eat the produce that’s in season. Not only will it taste better, but it will save you serious money. Out-of-season produce travels far, and you end up paying for that. Here are some recipes and produce ideas for eating in season this winter.
Cut your own vegetables & fruits.
It will take you a few extra minutes to wash and cut your fruits and vegetables. So, although it is convenient to have fruits and vegetables pre-cut and cleaned for you, you will also end up paying a premium for it. You can have them cleaned and cut and ready to use yourself instead and save on your grocery bill.
Have something to eat before you head to the grocery store.
This may sound unconventional, but the prepared food sections in grocery stores are laid out and displayed to grab your attention, and urge you to grab something quick and easy. So fill up your stomach ahead of time so you avoid the urge to buy extra food.
