DIY Kitchen Makeover On A Budget

As the weather warms up and the Home Depot commercials start playing nonstop, you might be feeling the need to transform an area of your home. If you need a DIY kitchen makeover without the consumer debt, here are a few budget-friendly DIY projects you can tackle.

Revamp your kitchen without derailing your debt management efforts.

How to Budget for a DIY Kitchen Makeover

Are you wondering how to budget for a DIY kitchen makeover? Whether you have $100 or $2,000 budget, there is a project for you! It’s really important to start off with a budget for this project since overspending can get you into credit card debt.

To stay on track, come up with a budget and a work scope that fits within the amount of money and time you have. Write out what you would like to accomplish. If you have a few goals, prioritize them. This way, if the top priority costs more than you anticipated, you at least accomplished the greatest need. Once you save more money, you can work on the next project and so forth.

Credit card debt management can be hard on a budget. Make your budget stretch by doing the work yourself. DIY projects can save a lot of money in labor costs. However, if you aren’t a trained electrician or not confident in some of your handy abilities, your best bet is to hire someone or find a friend with those specific talents. And maybe that friend can be paid in pizza instead of cash.

8 DIY Kitchen Makeover Projects

To get you started here is a list of 8 DIY kitchen makeover projects. The projects range in expense and intensity so that anyone’s budget can afford something without gaining any consumer debt.

  1. Buy new kitchen accessories- dishtowels, dish rack, utensil holder, curtains or blinds. Changing the styling of the kitchen is one of the cheapest DIY kitchen projects. It can still make a big difference.
  2. Change the hardware on the cabinets or the sink. By choosing reasonably priced hardware, you can update the kitchen with a new look that is probably not too difficult to install. Updating an old faucet can go a long way too.
  3. Add a colorful accent to the backs of your cabinets, especially those with glass fronts. A new pop of color can be a great addition. You could find remnants of wrapping paper, wallpaper, contact paper or scrapbook paper to get the job done.
  4. Paint the kitchen cabinets white or a different color. This refresher will take some time, but it’s vastly cheaper than trying to replace your cabinets. It will feel brand new without the cost. Plus, you won’t end up with any credit card debt!
  5. Paint the walls or remove outdated wallpaper trim. There will probably be a headache or two dealing with wallpaper, but the outcome will be great. Paint is not very expensive, especially in a kitchen where there isn’t much wall space.
  6. Take down some of the upper cabinets and replace them with open shelving. This could open up space and create some visual interest and drama!
  7. Add a backsplash. This is much easier than removing one and installing a new backsplash. Proceed with caution if you are not good with drywall repair…
  8. Install a new light fixture to brighten up the kitchen in more ways than one. This may or may not be a DIY kitchen makeover project. Use good judgment while working with electricity or just call an electrician.

Many of these projects will help if you are looking to stage your home to sell it in the near future without spending a lot of money. For more DIY kitchen makeover project inspiration, check out ACCC’s Pinterest board DIY Home Repair & Projects.
