Quick and Easy Home Weatherization Projects

So far in this weatherization series, we have discussed exterior and interior projects and the financial incentives of energy efficiency programs. This week we will focus on some quick and easy home weatherization projects that can help you stay warm this winter and lower utility bills. Eventually, that money can be better spent on things like paying off credit card debt or adding to your savings. Let’s hear a few tips from Bob Vila to get your home or apartment ready for winter!

Save Money with Quick and Easy Weatherization Projects

Check for drafts around windows and doors. Don’t let your heat switch places with a cold draft. Make sure seams are all sealed up and weather stripping is in place. Caulk inside and out, where necessary, to keep heat from escaping. Similarly, inspect windows for cracks, broken glass, or gaps and repair if needed. This should be quick to diagnose and easy to finish with just a few tools and materials.

Dress your house in winter gear. Replace all screen doors with storm doors, and replace all window screens with storm windows. You probably already have the storm doors and windows on site for another quick and easy weatherization fix. The extra layers of glass, metal and wood will help to ensure that you are not losing heat through these areas and money along with it. It will take less to keep your home at a comfortable temperature, lowering your utility bills. This will give your household budget more breathing room.

Make sure to utilize your programmable thermostat. According to Energy.gov, “By turning your thermostat back 10° to 15° for 8 hours, you can save 5% to 15% a year on your heating bill- a savings of as much as 1% for each degree if the setback period is eight hours long.” Dust off those instructions and put it to work saving you money. Once you program it, the thermostat does the work for you! It can’t get any easier or quicker than this.

Hang drapes, curtains or blankets. Investing in thermal curtains or drapes will make a difference and help insulate rooms. If you are in a pinch and don’t have heavy curtains or drapes, try hanging some extra blankets where the curtains usually go for a quick and easy weatherization boost. If you know it will be sunny, open the curtains during the day to get some extra warmth from the sun.

These are just a few examples of quick and easy weatherization projects that can keep you warm this winter and lower your utility costs. Remember, there are weatherization kits available at retail stores and homemade options that give the same effect. If you have time, try and make your own DIY door snake or drapes. You can also check out reuse stores for storm doors and windows to lower your costs.

Investing a little time and money in your home or apartment will give you a return on your utility bills and comfort. Take the newly freed money and put it somewhere else in your budget towards savings, debt management, or an emergency fund.
