So, how would you like your eggs? Sunny Side up you say. (Cracks open the egg onto a rock and starts cooking). Unless you live under that rock, you know how hot it has been this Summer. You walk outside and it feels like you are cooking. We are right at the peak of Summer and that means you’re going to crank up the air conditioner full blast right? Well, as you turn up the air conditioner, you’re increasing the price of the electric bill. So is there a way to beat the heat without beating up you’re budget? Well yes… or else I wouldn’t have wrote this blog post. Anyway here are some tips to help you save money on air conditioning.
Make sure all doors and windows are closed when running the air conditioner. Having an open window or door will allow the hot air in and the cool air to escape
Keep lights off. Lights generate heat which will make the house feel warmer
Use energy saving light bulbs, they generate less heat, use less energy, last longer than regular light bulbs
Avoid using the oven if possible. The oven can make it feel warmer than it really is
Keep blinds and curtains closed to reduce the heat generated by sunlight
Make sure to replace the filter in the air conditioner on a monthly basis to maintain its efficiency
Do you have a spare guest room that no one is using but is being cooled? Close the air duct to the room so that you are not wasting energy to cool it
Make sure you have an air conditioner that is the appropriate size for the room it is in. You could be using more energy than you have to. For help with the air conditioner unit that is best suited for your room, you can use this Cooling Capacity Calculator (When looking to purchase a new air conditioner, keep the Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) number in mind. If you tend to live in a warmer climate, you would want to look into air conditioners with a SEER number of 14 and up.)
Instead of cranking up the air conditioning all the way, use ceiling fans and standing/portable fans to cool down the house
Take a cold shower, it will help you feel cooler and keep you from turning the air conditioning up
If you have other ways to keep your electric bill down and still stay cool this Summer I am all ears. On a side note make sure if you are outside a lot to wear sunscreen. Believe me, sun burns are not fun.
