Every Tuesday we provide you with a helpful tip to help you save money, get organized, or otherwise try to improve your day.
Today’s tip: Use cold water to do your laundry.
Did you know that 90% of the energy used in a load of laundry is to heat the water? Well, maybe you can skip the heat. Advances in washing machines and detergent have made cold water a very effective and efficient option. Cold water is just as effective at getting your laundry clean.
Most people think that hot water gets your clothes cleaner, but it’s not necessarily true. Protein stains like blood and sweat can actually set in hot water. Hot water may also shrink some items.
Cold water is also less damaging to your clothes, so they will last longer. Plus, since you won’t be heating up the water, you can reduce the amount of carbon dioxide emission from your home. Oh, did I mention that it costs money to heat up water?
Wallet friendly. Clothing friendly. Environmentally friendly.
