Since it is the gift-giving season, now is a great time to remind you all that a receipt can be a powerful thing. I’m sure you purchased the perfect gifts for all of your loved ones. You know them all so well. You know what they want. There is no way they would possibly want to return or exchange your gift. BUT… maybe you should hold onto the receipt just in case.
In a perfect world everyone buys the right gift, in the right color, in the right size. But in the real world mistakes are made, signals get crossed, and sometimes people wind up with a gift that they just don’t want. We all understand it’s the thought that counts, but do you want your gift recipient to be stuck with an unwanted item? If not, then you should keep the receipt. You could even ask for a gift receipt from the retailer so that the price doesn’t appear. Just include that in the package, and let your gift-recipient decide what to do.
Without a receipt, a return or exchange may not be worth as much as what you spent. The item may have dropped in price. Without a receipt, they can’t prove what price was actually paid. Then they may not get the full value in return, and everyone loses out.
Also make sure you are aware of the store’s return policy. Many stores offer different rules for returns, like time limits, receipts, or restrictions for certain items. Read more about that here… Buyer Beware: Holiday Return Policies
